First, recording sessions take place in my home recording studio, where I use high-quality equipment to capture every nuance of my performance. Each recording session can last for several hours, and depending on the length of the book several recording sessions could be needed.

Once the recording is complete, the files are edited and mastered to ensure that the finished audio is of the highest possible quality. This process includes removing any unwanted noises or mistakes, adjusting the volume levels, and adding equalization to make sure the audio is balanced and clear.

Producing a professional audiobook takes time and dedication. As a general rule of thumb, it can take as much as 4-6 hours of work to produce 1 hour of finished audio. That’s why it’s important to work with a skilled voice actor who has the experience and dedication necessary to deliver a top-quality product.

The Cost of Audiobook Narration

If you’re an author or publisher looking to create a professional audiobook, finding the right narrator is essential. But how do you navigate the various pricing models to ensure that you’re getting a fair deal for your investment? There are three primary pricing options for narrator jobs: Royalty Share, Per Finished Hour (PFH), and a Hybrid agreement.

With a royalty share pricing model, the narrator and rights holder split the royalties from each book sold. This option can be attractive for authors and publishers who are looking to offset some of the upfront costs of audiobook production. However, with how much time it takes to produce an audiobook it can be a challenge to find an experienced narrator willing to put in the hours of work without any guarantee of a return on investment.

On the other hand, PFH is an hourly rate pricing model where the narrator receives a set amount for each hour of finished audio produced. This option is typically best for those who are willing to invest more upfront for a higher level of quality and control over the finished product.

They Hybrid agreement combines Royalty Share with a PFH rate. Typically the narrator will receive a smaller hourly rate in addition to splitting the royalties on all future sales. This allows authors and publishers to keep their upfront costs of producing the audiobook low, but ensures the narrator that they will receive some compensation for their time.

As a professional narrator, I offer both PFH and Hybrid pricing options, and I’m happy to work with authors and publishers to find the right model for their needs.
